The effects of sour tea (Hibiscus sabdariffa) on hypertension in patients with type II diabetes

Abstract: To compare the antihypertensive effectiveness of sour tea (ST; Hibiscus sabdariffa) with black tea (BT) infusion in diabetic patients, this double-blind randomized controlled trial was carried out. Sixty diabetic patients with mild hypertension, without taking antihypertensive or antihyperlipidaemic medicines, were recruited in the study. “…A similar effect was observed in the case of hypertension in patients with type II diabetes(Mozaffari-Khosravi et al , 2009) and mild to moderate hypertensive subjects(Nwachukwu et al , 2015). A recent meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials was conducted by Sahebkar et al which showed a significant effect of H. sabdariffa supplementation in lowering both SBP and DBP.…”

“…This could demonstrate the effect of the Roselle calyces extract as a diuretic and as an ACE inhibitor (Herrera-Arellano et al 2007). Mozaffari-Khosravi et al (2009) found that the daily consumption of Roselle calyces infusion lowered the blood pressure in diabetic patients. The infusion of Roselle (2 g in 250 mL of hot water for 20 to 30 min) was supplied for 1 month to patients in the morning and evening.…”

“…Chao dan Yin (2008) pula mendapati bahawa buah rosel mempunyai sifat sebagai antioksida dan antimikrob. Selain itu, H.sabdariffa juga telah dibuktikan mampu menjadi agen antidiabetes disebabkan keupayaannya dalam menurunkan aras hiperglisemia dan tekanan oksidatif (Mozaffari-Khosravi et al 2009). …”
