The composition of Alpine goats' milk during lactation in Greece

Abstract: SummaryVariations in chemical composition and in some physico-chemical properties of milk from a herd of lactating Alpine goats imported into Greece were determined from week 8 after parturition until the end of lactation (35 weeks, 35 samples). The average composition (g/100 g) of the milk was: fat 3·44, protein 3·35, casein 2·46, lactose 4·30, ash 0·79, total solids 11·76 and solids-not-fat 8·32. The average pH was 6·57 and titratable acidity was 16·76 (°D). The averaged density was 1·030. The mean mineral c… Show more

“…Nevertheless, Fernández (2000) and Večeřová and Křížek (1993b) did not find the lier size as a source of milk production variation. In agreement with Milerski and Mareš (2001) the highest protein contents were observed in goats with single liers and lower fat contents in does with three and more kids.In concordance with other authors (Voutsinas et al, 1990;Haenlein, 1996;Zeng et al, 1997), the effect of lactation stage (lst) was observed as a source of variation for the three traits in both models (2 and 3). Figure 1 shows the average lactation curves of MY, FP and PP and their respective 3rd degree polynomial trend lines.…”

“…However, thereafter the opposite trend was found and its highest value was recorded at the end of lactation. On the other hand, Voutsinas et al (1988) and Sahan et al (2005) reported that the SG of sheep milk decreased during the first six or seven weeks of lactation. However, thereafter its values remained relatively stable until the end of lactation.…”
