Extra virgin olive oil sustainability shows that it is strictly connected to local production and certifications. However, consumers’ behaviour toward a local product is tied with the information exchange between producers and consumers. The aim of the research is to analyse, using a logistic regression model, if the attitudes, habits, and behaviours of the consumers influence their opinion on the sustainability of local extra virgin olive oil, relative to the three dimensions of sustainability (environmental, socio-cultural, and economic). This study tries to combine studies about agri-food sustainability and consumers’ behaviour about local consumption, in an attempt to evaluate their attitude towards an agroecology food regime. Indeed, this information can be useful in order to plan adequate and specific interventions to improve the sustainability of the extra virgin olive oil production. The results indicate that the opinion about the sustainability of local extra virgin olive oil is linked to the information exchange between producers and consumers. This confirms that local alternative trade channels require numerous interventions in order to simplify and improve such exchange, both from a managerial and political point of view. Moreover, it can be useful to develop the information and communication technologies, in order to ensure the reliability, the transparency, and the security of the information exchange. This can also be useful to prevent frauds that are very common for this product.

O objetivo do trabalho foi investigar a realidade da inserção dos alimentos da sóciobiodiversidade na alimentação escolar das escolas públicas do estado de Minas Gerais e sua relação com as questões ambientais. Tratou-se de uma pesquisa documental de abordagem qualitativa e os materiais de investigação foram as sistematizações elaboradas pelo CECANE IFSULDEMINAS no produto das Oficinas Regionais realizadas em 2018. As oficinas foram realizadas em diferentes regiões do estado, nos municípios de Lavras, Boa Esperança, Bambuí, Uberlândia e Pompéu. Foi constatado um total de 73 itens alimentares diferentes, destes 15 são considerados nativos dos biomas brasileiros e seis Plantas Alimentícias Não Convencionais (PANCs). O resultado do levantamento feito nas oficinas demonstrou pouca diversidade alimentar nos cardápios escolares, sendo que 26 itens foram citados em todas oficinas. Este padrão alimentar é preocupante do ponto de vista ambiental, uma vez que está restrito a poucas espécies de plantas. Por outro lado, o Brasil é um país de grande riqueza biológica, com muitas espécies consideradas propícias para a alimentação humana, onde a simbiose entre homem e natureza acontece nos processos de sociobiodiversidade, um potencial a ser valorizado, em que a escola aparece como um mecanismo estratégico de incentivo.

A Scenario-Based Simulation of Land System Changes on Dietary Changes: A Case Study in China

The dietary change of Chinese residents is driven by increasing incomes and urbanization, which will bring about non-negligible changes in the food production of the land system. To explore how dietary changes might influence future land systems and the environment, this research hypothesizes two potential dietary change scenarios in the period 2010–2030, based on the current trends and Dietary Guidelines for Chinese Residents (DGCR), and applies the CLUMondo model to simulate the spatiotemporal patterns of land systems and estimates a lifecycle’s environmental impacts on dietary change. As shown in the results, dietary changes would obviously alter the land cover, agricultural intensity, and livestock density of land systems, and the changes in land use intensity are noteworthy. If the current trend of dietary change is unchecked, the intensification and expansion of agriculture and animal husbandry would be widely distributed in North China and Northwest China, where the intensity of cropland was low in the past and the ecosystem was relatively fragile. Moreover, the increasing demands for food lead to sharp increases in the carbon footprint, water footprint, and ecological footprint from food production. In contrast, the balanced diet recommended by DGCR could offer considerable environmental benefits. This diet is conducive to cutting down land use intensity, helping natural systems avoid intensification, and the expansion of agriculture and animal husbandry, which lower footprints from food production and have helped to implement the policy of returning croplands to grassland and forests in China. Therefore, popularizing balanced diets could be a win–win for human health and environmental sustainability.
