The Atlantic Stratocumulus Transition Experiment—ASTEX

Abstract: The Atlantic Stratocumulus Experiment (ASTEX) was conducted over the northeast Atlantic Ocean during June 1992 with substantial international collaboration. The main goal of ASTEX was to study the climatologically important transition between solid stratocumulus and subtropical trade cumulus cloud regimes using island, aircraft, ship, and satellite measurements. Typically, the boundary layer was found to support cumulus clouds detraining into a patchy and fairly thin upper-stratocumulus layer. The substantial … Show more

“…At the same time, meteorological factors and the decoupling processes have large influences on the cloud LWP variation as well. The aircraft flights lasted no more than five hours on each flight days and the time gap between two flights was generally longer than 24 h. Thus, it was not possible to capture the continuous evolution of the cloud layer and the processes affecting the boundary layer structure and clouds at the time scales from hours to days, which could also be critical for the cloud LWP variation (e.g., Albrecht et al, 1995a;Sandu et al, 2008). Additionally, only 18 flights were completed, which is insufficient for finding a statistically significant correlation.…”

“…Stratocumulus -the ASTEX case ASTEX took place over the area near the Azores and Madeira Islands in the Atlantic Ocean off North Africa on 1−28 June 1992 (Albrecht et al 1995). A stratocumulus case with no drizzle was configured based upon the ASTEX observations (de Roode and Duynkerke 1997) 2 , which represented a typical stratocumulus-topped boundary layer.…”

“…They play an important role in the moisture transport to the free atmosphere (Tiedtke, 1989) and for the earth's radiation budget (Albrecht et al, 1995). Furthermore, shallow cumulus convection significantly influences the dynamics of the sub-cloud layer (SCL) and cloud layer (CL) by intensifying the vertical transport of moisture, momentum, and heat from the surface to higher levels (Stevens, 2007).…”
