The application of analytic hierarchy process in higher-learning institutions: a literature review

Abstract: Currently, there has been increasing interest in the application of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) in the educational sector. However, little effort has been made in reviewing its applications particularly in higherlearning institutions (HLIs). Thus, this paper attempts to systematically review and critically examine the applications of the AHP in this context covering 33 empirical and conceptual studies published in the period of 1992-2013. The studies are examined on the basis of four specific dimensio… Show more

“…Three models were chosen for evaluation in this specific research project. They include benchMark [11], an outputs-only based data envelopment analysis (DEA) model [22], and the traditional analytic hierarchy process (AHP) [2]. The benchMark program was selected because it is an empirical student ranking model that ranks students according to their academic progress in a module.…”

“…Since its introduction, AHP has been applied extensively and effectively in many disciplines especially in complex decision and evaluation problems involving a multitude of objectives and stakeholders (Saaty, 1977). This is because AHP is flexible, explicit and easily traceable (Contreras et al, 2008;Anis & Islam, 2015). In fact, AHP has been applied in more than 30 diverse fields ranging from medicine, logistics, petroleum pipeline, hospitality, fast food restaurants, accounting, urban and regional planning and so on (Saaty & Islam, 2015).…”

“…For the current developments, theoretical extensions, issues and applications of the AHP, see the reviews of Zahedi (1986), Vaidya and Kumar (2006) and Sipahi and Timor (2010) on the overview of applications, Ho (2008) for the integration of other approaches and their applications, Ishizaka and Labib (2011) on its main developments, Subramanian and Ramanathan (2012) for its various applications in operations management, (Schmidt et al, 2015) for healthcare research, Anis and Islam (2015) for applications in higher learning institutions, Chandio et al (2013) on GIS-based integration, Maleki and Zahir (2013) on rank reversal phenomenon issue, and Godinho et al (2011) issues with R&D project selection application, among others.…”
