The anxiolytic-like effect of an essential oil derived from Spiranthera odoratissima A. St. Hil. leaves and its major component, β-caryophyllene, in male mice

Abstract: Spiranthera odoratissima A. St. Hil. (manacá) is used in folk medicine to treat renal and hepatic diseases, stomachache, headaches and rheumatism. A central nervous system (CNS) depressant effect of the hexane fraction from the ethanolic extract of this plant has been described. β-caryophyllene, the main component of this essential oil, is a sesquiterpene compound with anti-inflammatory properties that has been found in essential oils derived from several medicinal plants. This work is aimed to evaluate the ph… Show more

“…Bento et al [45] further demonstrated that the anti-inflammatory effect of β-caryophyllene involves both CB2 receptor activation and the PPARγ pathway. Recently, one study reported that β-caryophyllene, a lipophilic molecule, can exert an anxiolytic-like effect on mice [46]. Besides, another study reported that β-caryophyllene exerts its therapeutic effect on cerebral ischemia by reducing mitochondrial dysfunction and intracellular oxidative stress and by increasing the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor [47].…”

“…It is considered that the difference between these two samples comes from the difference in volatile component composition. For example, previous papers have suggested that β-caryophyllene, one of the characteristic components in rose flowers, has a sedative effect (Galdino et al, 2012). Different aroma components are likely to cause different effects on humans.…”

“…From this point of view, sesquiterpenes have significantly lower antioxidant activity. These compounds (β-caryophyllene, α-humulene) have rather different effect; many literature data are referring to β-caryophyllene, concerning its potential anti-inflammatory (Fernandes et al, 2007;Horváth et al, 2012), antispasmodic (Leonhardt et al, 2010), and anxiolytic-like effects (Moreira-Galdino et al, 2012). The antiinflammatory effect of α-humulene was also investigated (Fernandes et al, 2007).…”
