Effects of different factors influencing the essential oil properties of Thymus vulgaris L.

Abstract: Thymus vulgaris L. is a well-know medicinal and aromatic plant native to the Mediterranean region. The essential oil is considered as the main active constituent, being responsible for its typical odour and taste as well as for several therapeutic effects. Our aim was to demonstrate the most important factors influencing the quality and quantity parameters of thyme oil by summarizing the available literature data and our own scientific results. Genetic background, climatic and growing conditions, techniques of… Show more

“…The differences can be due to various geographic location, weather conditions, plant organs, extraction methods, soil types of the harvested areas and (Afshari et al, 2016;Pluhár et al, 2016;Rowshan et al, 2013). Further, recent studies have shown that the biological effects of plant essential oils are directly related to their principal components and even their synergistic effects with other components (Isman et al, 2011;Regnault-Roger et al, 2011).…”

“…Application of essential oils (EOs) as natural antimicrobial agents became widespread in the food industry, pharmaceutical, and medicinal products over the past decades [ 12 , 13 ]. The composition of EOs can be influenced by several factors: environmental factors, vegetation period, collection technique, distillation procedure, chemotype, and collected herbal parts as well [ 14 18 ]. Therefore, different factors may alter the quantity of the main compounds, besides it also leads to modified biological activity [ 19 , 20 ].…”

“…Thymus vulgaris L. is a Mediterranean aromatic plant, which belongs to the Lamiaceae family. Among the six chemotypes, the thymol-dominated one is the most widespread in the natural habitats [ 18 ]. According to previous reports, the antimicrobial activity is probably influenced by the main compounds (thymol and carvacrol), indicated programmed cell death mechanism [ 27 ].…”

“…Moreover, the high number of hybrids of this genus make it difficult to determine of cultivars to the correct species. Several cultivars, such as Carvalia, De Dolj, Krajovy, Linalia, RH‐1, RH‐2, Sloneczko, Thymlia, Varico 1, Varico 2, and Varico 3 have been introduced by many countries [18,19] . The demand for high amount of thymol content led to the emergence of a new hybrid, T. vulgaris L. Varico 3.…”
