The actual status of research on photovoltaic energy conversion with regard to its possible role in the production of electric power from solar radiation is reviewed. Silicon cells in single-crystalline or semi-crystalline forms are considered to be the dominant devices for the next decade. A variety of possibilities yielding lower fabrication costs and still high conversion efficiencies exist; an order-of-magnitude reduction from the present-day cost level turns out to be a realistic goal. This can be achieved by a combined effort in the fields of silicon material preparation, cell processing and module fabrication.Other longer term viable options are amorphous silicon, thin-film GaAs, 11-VI compounds such as CdS and some advanced approaches using concentrated sunlight. It is believed that ultimately module efficiency will strongly determine the economic viability of a photovoltaic material.

2014 L'élaboration du silicium photovoltaïque exige de savoir contrôler de façon permanente sa pureté chimique et ses propriétés physiques. Les nombreuses études développées au cours des dernières années ont montré le rôle critique de certaines impuretés. Toutefois les travaux sur les associations chimiques capables d'apparaître au cours de l'histoire thermique du matériau font défaut Ainsi n'est-il pas alors étonnant de constater que les propriétés photovoltaïques d'un même matériau semblent dépendre des phases d'élaboration de la structure cristalline (C.Z., Bridgman, H.E.M....) [1-6], les impuretés subissant des ségrégations dans la phase liquide, aux joints de grain ou dans des combinaisons chimiques avec les laitiers de protection des creusets. Parmi les techniques d'élaboration du silicium photovoltaïque nous avons cherché à développer la méthode originale de fusion de zone sous plasma inductif d'argon [5,6]. La technique qui s'apparente plus à une extraction conjointe solide-liquide, liquide-liquide et liquide-gaz permet l'élaboration à partir du silicium métallurgique d'un silicium polycristallin à gros grain et de très haute pureté.Abstract 2014 Préparation of photovoltaic silicon requires to analyse systematically the purity and physical properties of the material. Processes for Production of Solar‐Grade Silicon Using Hydrogen Reduction and/or Thermal Decomposition

High‐purity Si used for photovoltaic applications, namely, solar‐grade Si (SOG‐Si), is commercially manufactured using the Siemens process. Although the present levels of supply satisfy the demand, there can potentially be a shortage of SOG‐Si in the long term. To overcome the low productivity of the Siemens process, various types of SOG‐Si production/purification processes have been developed as post‐Siemens processes. Some processes are under development as new commercial processes. These processes can be classified into the following three categories: (1) hydrogen reduction and/or thermal decomposition of silane‐based gases in improved Siemens‐based processes, (2) metallothermic reduction of silicon halides by Zn or Al, and (3) upgrading metallurgical‐grade Si by employing metallurgical purification methods. This paper presents a review of various types of SOG‐Si production processes, particularly those based on the hydrogen reduction and/or thermal decomposition of halides and silane‐based gases. These processes are classified on the basis of Si compounds used and the reaction types; further, the features of these processes are also analyzed. Future prospects for the development of new high‐purity Si production process are also presented.
