Systematic studies in the genus Pimpinella L. (Umbelliferae) from tropical Africa

Abstract: ABEBE, D., 1992. Systematic studies in the genus Pimpinella (Umbelliferae) from tropical Africa. Twenty species of the genus Pimpinella, mostly from tropical Africa, were studied by a multidisciplinary approach. The overall results showed that morphological and anatomical characters of the fruit were crucial in determining the generic and specific status. Pimpinella simense sensu Benth., Schimperella verrucosa sensu Wolff are recognized as Sium simense. Four recently described species are included. Pimpinella … Show more

“…Previously, the chromosome number 2 n = 20 was reported by Cardona (1977) from a population located near our sampled accessions from Cosconar. Both x = 10 and x = 11 numbers have been reported in Pimpinella species [see Abebe (1992) for a general discussion of the cytogenetic features of the genus]. Abebe (1992) reported conflicting results concerning n = 10 and n = 11 in some tropical African species, and suggested that misidentifications or technical inaccuracies were responsible for the disagreements.…”

Abebe (1992) reported conflicting results concerning n = 10 and n = 11 in some tropical African species, and suggested that misidentifications or technical inaccuracies were responsible for the disagreements. However, it should be stressed that intraspecific aneuploid variation has been demonstrated in at least 14 species, including P. affinis Ledeb.…”

“…The c. 150 species constituting the genus Pimpinella L.-Apiaceae Lindl.-are distributed in temperate and subtropical regions of Eurasia and Africa including Madagascar. Turkey is one of the main centers of diversity for this genus along with Africa and Madagascar (Aksenov 1972;Abebe 1992). In his classical monograph, Wolff (1927) subdivided Pimpinella into three sections-P. sect.…”

“…The genus Pimpinella L. (Apiaceae) includes about 150-170 species and is disjunct between Africa, Asia, and Europe (Pimenov and Leonov, 1993;Pu and Watson, 2005). It is one of the largest genera in Apiaceae and considered as taxonomically complex genus due to its wide geographical range and diverse morphological variation (Abebe, 1992). Small and rather featureless fruits are the general characteristics of this genus (Pu and Watson, 2005).…”
