Karyological observations on plant taxa endemic to the Balearic Islands

Abstract: Mitotic chromosome numbers are reported from 35 vascular plant taxa endemic to the Balearic Islands that are poorly known cytogenetically. The chromosome numbers of Chaenorhinum rodriguezii (2 n = 14), Coristospermum huteri (2 n = 22), Carduus ibicensis (2 n = 26), Filago petro-ianii (2 n = 26), Ononis crispa ssp. zschackei (2 n = 30), and Ophrys bertolonii ssp. balearica (2 n = 36) were determined for the first time. New chromosome numbers are reported in Pimpinella bicknellii (2 n = 22), Calamintha rouyana (… Show more

“…The Balearic Islands comprise a continental archipelago for which the basic karyological knowledge of the sexually reproducing endemic flora has been revised recently (Castro & Rosselló, 2005, 2006, 2007. Among the genera containing agamospermous species, Limonium Mill.…”

“…For example, 10 pairs of chromosomes have been observed in our accession of D. muricatus , in contrast with the 11 pairs previously recorded for this species (Bell and Constance, 1960; Vogt and Oberprieler, 1994). The occurrence of different cytotypes has been reported in at least 14 species of Pimpinella (Castro and Rosselló, 2007), including P. anisum (2 n = 18, 20), P. major (2 n = 18, 20) and P. saxifraga L. (2 n = 18, 20; 2 n = 36, 40) (Jurtseva, 1988). Our accessions of P. anisum and P. saxifraga have 20 and 40 chromosomes, respectively.…”

“…However, the lectotype is a sterile fragment only. To avoid ambiguity concerning the two subspecies nowadays recognized in O. crispa (Mus 1992, Alomar et al 1997, Rosselló et al 1997, Castro and Rosselló 2007, Sáez et al 2017) an epitype showing floral characters would need to be designated (Art. 9.8 of the ICN, McNeill et al 2012).…”

“…In addition to O. crispa s. s., several authors (Mus 1992, Alomar et al 1997, Rosselló et al 1997, Castro and Rosselló 2007, Sáez et al 2017) recognize an infraspecific segregate endemic to Mallorca, O. crispa subsp. zschackei (F.…”
