Synthesis and modification of supports with an alkylamine and their use in albumin adsorption

Abstract: The morphological effect of polymeric networks (R) modified with terminal amino groups was studied on the adsorption of bovine serum albumin (BSA). Networks of ethylene glycol dimethacrylate and 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate [poly (EGDMA‐co‐HEMA)] were synthesized by suspension polymerization, using different EGDMA contents and agitation speeds. These matrices were characterized by FTIR, mercury intrusion porosimetry, SEM, and swelling degree. The increase of the EGDMA concentration led to the formation of netwo… Show more

“…The activation reaction was first carried out using a mol ratio 1:12:0.5 of hydroxyl groups, oxirane and base, respectively. Figure 3 shows a typical U‐shape activation curve, where the Ech derivatives and BDGE present a similar behavior related to two opposed effects described in a previous work by Gomez and Strumia 20. One effect is characterized by the amount of hydroxyl groups present in the matrix; the other relates to the diffusion into the network together with its accessible surface.…”

“…In all cases, the polymerization yield was between a 95 and 98 % w/w. In a previous work20 these networks have just been characterized, where the increase of the EGDMA concentration was found to lead to an earlier phase separation during polymerization. Therefore, networks with a higher crosslinking degree (∼1/ Q v ), S s value and porosity (Table 1) were attained.…”

“…Ligand stability is becoming an increasingly important consideration. The recent trend, therefore, has been to replace high molecular mass biological ligands with small molecular-mass pseudospecific ligands [9][10][11].…”
