The chemical cross-linking of carboxymethyl chitosan (O-CM-chitosan), as a method for its modification, was performed using trimellitic anhydride isothiocyanate to obtain novel cross-linked O-CM-chitosan hydrogel. Its structure was proven using FTIR, XRD and SEM. Its adsorption capacity for the removal of Methylene Blue (MB) dye from aqueous solution was studied. The effects of different factors on the adsorption process, such as the pH, temperature and concentration of the dye, in addition to applications of the kinetic studies of the adsorption process, adsorption isotherm and thermodynamic parameters, were studied. It was found that the amount of adsorbed MB dye increases with increasing temperature. A significant increase was obtained in the adsorption capacities and removal percentage of MB dye with increasing pH values. An increase in the initial dye concentration increases the adsorption capacities, and decreases the removal percentage. It was found that the pseudo-second-order mechanism is predominant, and the overall rate of the dye adsorption process appears to be controlled by more than one step. The Langmuir model showed high applicability for the adsorption of MB dye onto O-CM-chitosan hydrogel. The value of the activation energy (Ea) is 27.15 kJ mol−1 and the thermodynamic parameters were evaluated. The regeneration and reuse of the investigated adsorbent was investigated.

The intention of the present study was to synthesize Gum ghatti-cl-poly(acrylic acid)/-o-MWCNT hydrogel by free radical copolymerization method where the role of various ingredients are as: Gum ghatti as biopolymer (GG), acrylic acid (AA) as a probe for synthetic monomer, ammonium persulfate as initiator and methylene bis-acrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinker. The oxidized multiwalled nanocarbon tubes (-o-MWCNT) with variable amounts (0-50 mg) were used as fillers. The as-prepared hydrogels were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.The rheological investigation of hydrogels revealed that the storage modulus (G 0 ) was always higher than the loss modulus (G 00 ) in the linear viscoelastic region over the entire frequency range. The persistent covalence crosslinking is responsible for the solid-like behavior and elastic nature (G 0 > G 00 ). Hydrogels containing Gum ghatti-cl-poly(acrylic acid)/-o-MWCNT increased with strain. The nonlinear oscillatory shear increases by the addition -o-MWCNT.The features shown highlight the potential of Gum ghatti-cl-poly(acrylic acid)/-o-MWCNT hydrogels for agricultural, medicinal, and pharmaceutical applications.

Enhancement of the thermal stability of PVC filled with multiwalled carbon nanotubes using new antimicrobic itaconimido aryl 1,3,4‐oxadiazoles

A series of PVC films stabilized with novel antimicrobial itaconimido aryl 1,3,4-oxadiazoles (D1'-D4'), at absence or presence of various concentrations of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), was prepared by a conventional solution casting method. D1'-D4' was prepared via thermal cyclization processes by loss of water for their congruous predecessors itaconimido aryl hydrazides. Elemental analysis and various spectroscopy measurements were used to prove their structures. D1'-D4' have great antimicrobial activities and some of them showed similar or sometimes higher impact than the reference antibiotic. From TG measurements in nitrogen, they have high thermal stabilities and their decomposition temperatures were above 275-310 C in accordance with substituent groups NH 2 and/or OH incorporated into their structures. They have higher thermal stabilizing efficiencies for PVC in comparison with some industrial thermal stabilizers. Inclusion of 0.1-0.5 wt% MWCNTs into PVC films, that were stabilized with D4', enhanced the composites thermal stability. XRD, SEM as well as TEM were used for ascertaining of incorporation and well dispersion of MWCNTs into PVC matrices. Additionally, the efficacy of stabilization has been proven via a decreased rate of color alteration, mechanical properties change and chains cleavage for PVC. The high antimicrobial and thermal characteristics of these stabilizers afford them a great possibility to secure antimicrobial thermally stable PVC composites. Also, improvement of thermal and mechanical properties of PVC stabilized by D4' after its incorporation with MWCNTs afford a great possibility to its application in different fields where their thermal resistance and high tensile strength resistance play a very important role.
