Supplementation of a western diet with golden kiwifruits (Actinidia chinensis var.'Hort 16A':) effects on biomarkers of oxidation damage and antioxidant protection

Abstract: BackgroundThe health positive effects of diets high in fruits and vegetables are generally not replicated in supplementation trials with isolated antioxidants and vitamins, and as a consequence the emphasis of chronic disease prevention has shifted to whole foods and whole food products.MethodsWe carried out a human intervention trial with the golden kiwifruit, Actinidia chinensis, measuring markers of antioxidant status, DNA stability, plasma lipids, and platelet aggregation. Our hypothesis was that supplemen… Show more

“…Isolated lymphocytes were subsequently counted, resuspended in cryostorage media (90 % FBS, 10 % glycerol) and stored at −80 °C until analysis. The single cell gel electrophoresis assay was used to investigate the influence of the intervention on genotoxicity, anti-genotoxicity and oxidative purine damage as described by Brevick et al [29]. DNA damage was quantified using an epifluorescent microscope and Komet 3.0 image analysis software (Kinetic Imaging Ltd, Liverpool, UK).…”

“…Kiwifruit contains very significant amounts of various phytochemicals, such as anthocyanidins and flavonols [27]. The common green kiwifruit, Actinidia deliciosa, has been used in several trials to examine effects on biomarkers relevant to CVD [4,[28][29][30]. Daily consumption of two or three kiwifruits reduced platelet aggregation response, blood pressure and plasma lipids [4,[28][29][30].…”
