Subantimicrobial dose doxycycline as an adjunct to scaling and root planing: post‐treatment effects

Abstract: The administration of SDD 20 mg bid for a period of up to 9 months is not associated with rebound effects or delayed or negative after-effects for a 3-month period after cessation of therapy.

“…MMP-8 has the unique ability to breakdown type I and III collagen, which is critical for periodontal destruction. Subantimicrobial doses of doxycycline inhibit MMP-8 and reduce periodontal disease activity (15,16). In the present study, salivary MMP-8 levels were higher in periodontitis and gingivitis patients compared to the healthy subjects and this is in agreement with previous studies (11,13).…”

“…Increased production of a given cytokine is associated with carriage of a risk genotype. Previously, the risk of having periodontal disease has been related to carriage of rare alleles of single cytokine and receptor molecule genes such as IL-1, TNF-a, IL-6 and CD-14 (Caton et al, 2001;Novak et al, 2002;Miller et al, 2006;Rai et al, 2007). MMPs are derived predominantly from polymorphonuclear leukocytes during acute stages of periodontal diseases.…”

“…112,115 Several studies have shown that use of LDD as adjunctive therapy to SRP could provide additional benefits in the management of chronic periodontitis compared to non-surgical periodontal treatment alone. 99,101,110,112,116 Golub et al 99 determined that LDD regimen administered to patients with adult periodontitis can reduce pathologic elevations in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) collagenase activity and improve attachment level measurements. Mavragani et al 100 demonstrated that systemic administration of LDD inhibited root resorption, alveolar bone loss, increased the alveolar bone mass and decreased number of osteoclast in the rat with experimental orthodontic tooth movement.…”
