Studies of biochemical parameters in breast cancer with and without metastasis

Abstract: The study includes 102 confirmed cases of carcinoma breast with and without metastasis and 25 healthy non-pregnant females. They were evaluated for blood levels of Ferritin, GSH, LDH, ALP, GGT and Hb before and 21 days after mastectomy. A significant increase (p<0.001) was observed in ferritin, LDH and GSH levels in cancer patients without metastasis in comparison to normal control subjects. Patients with metastasis had further elevated (p<0.001) levels of Ferritin, ALP and GGT as compared to non-metastatic pa… Show more

“…The expression of GTP has been regarded as a marker of neoplastic progression in several experimental models such as rodent skin and liver chemical carcinogenesis (30). In a clinical study of patients with breast carcinoma, Mishra et al (31) established significantly higher blood levels of GTP in patients with metastasis vs. patients without metastasis and normal controls. Significantly higher levels of GTP have been reported also in a number of human malignant neoplasms, for example, ovary, colon, lung, and leukemia (32).…”

“…11 Several tumor markers are in vogue now a days, which include alpha-feto protein, Carcino embryonic antigen, Human chorionic gonadotrophin, Prostate specific antigen and relatively less specific makers like Lactate dehydrogenase, Alkaline phosphatase, ferritin and Gamma glutamyl transpeptidase etc. 12 Earlier studies reported that 21 days (3 weeks) of surgery seems to be too short a period for any significant change to occur in biochemical parameters and a longer follow up was needed to establish prognostic importance. 6 Hence, our study conducted with minimum samples immediate after treatment, further follow-up studies with large samples were warranted.…”

“…1 Unfortunatey in most of the cases of cancer, symptoms are not produced until the tumors are either too large to be removed surgically or metastasis has taken place. 2 In normal physiological conditions each tissue maintains a steady and consistent enzymatic pattern which is altered significantly in malignancy as the constituents are shed into surrounding milieu at an increased rate when cells replicate more rapidly. Cancer is a proliferative and invasive disease and tumor cells respire anaerobically.…”

“…There is therefore need for simple biochemical investigations which can be easily assayed, are less expensive and can detect metastases. 2 Hence, present study was undertaken to evaluate the importance of assessing the serum levels of Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) and Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) in patients of carcinoma breast and also to correlate probable relationship between serum levels of these tumor markers and stages of breast cancer.…”
