“…The first electron microscopic investigations on coffee ringspot showed the presence of rod-shaped, tubular structures, measuring 35-40 nm X 100-110 nm -similar to the inner components of rhabdovirus -located generally in the nucleus and occasionally in elements of the endoplasmic reticulum of cells of foliar tissues taken from naturally affected coffee plants (KITAJIMA and COSTA 1972). Similar particles were also found closely associated with Citrus leprosis (KITAJIMA et al 1972) and foliar spotting of ordiids (PETZOLD 1971, DuvEL and PETERS 1971, BEGTRUP 1972, LESEMANN and BEGTRUP 1971, KITAJIMA et al 1974, LESEMANN and DORAISWAMY 1975a, 1975b, Doi et al 1977) their viral etiology being suggested. In some instances in which besides these tubular, rod-like particles, also appeared larger, cytoplasmic membranesurrounded particles, the former were interpreted as mner components and the latter as the virions (LESEMANN and BEGTRUP 1972, LESEMANN and DORAIS-wAMY 1975a, 1975.…”
