Structure and Mechanical Properties of High-Density Polyethylene Composites Reinforced with Glassy Carbon

Abstract: In this paper, we investigated theimpact of glassy carbon (GC) reinforcement oncrystal structure and the mechanical performance of high-density polyethylene (HDPE). We made composite samples by mixing HDPE granules with powder in ethanol followed bymelt mixing in a laboratory extruder. Along with the investigated composite, we also prepared samples with carbon nanotubes (CNT), graphene (GNP) and graphite (Gr) to compare GC impact with already used carbon fillers. To evaluate crystal structure and crystallinity… Show more

“…The degree of crystallinity (DC) was calculated according to: DC = (ΔH f /ΔH f *) × 100%, where ΔH f is the actual heat of fusion of the HDPE sample tested, obtained by measuring the area under its thermogram peak; ΔH f * is equal to 293 J/g, corresponding to the heat of fusion of perfectly crystalline HDPE [ 45 , 46 ]. The pure HDPE, blue HDPE, and orange HDPE had a degree of crystallinity of 85.2%, 85.1%, and 75.5%, respectively.…”

“…Ra = 0.30 m), which provides the best potential survivability of human osteoblasts, was found in 30 nm Al 2 O 3 reinforced composites. There is evidence that current glass-reinforced PEEK or Ti-6Al-4V manufactured using fast prototyping technology can be utilized to construct implants that can be used in clinical situations [7]. PEEK implants may be improved in cytocompatibility, soft tissue integration, and osseointegration by using TiO 2 nanostructure forms [8].…”
