The present article is a critical review about ETFE (ethylene tetrafluoroethylene) material, with emphasis on building applications since ETFE is promising for the building sector, offering multiple advantages (elastic and low-weight structures, etc.) from different points of view. Selected references about ETFE properties are presented, revealing that ETFE material presents resistance to temperature/aging, mechanical strength and chemical resistance. In addition, studies about light transmission/insulation of ETFE material for building applications are included, showing that ETFE cushion insulating characteristics can be further improved by utilizing additional layers while some studies refer to ETFE decay in terms of light and solar transmittance performances after some months of exposure. Investigations which compare ETFE with glass are also presented, revealing that ETFE offers many advantages, in comparison with glass, from different points of view. A separate part of the article is about ETFE environmental profile and the literature review demonstrates that most of the investigations (which include LCA (life cycle assessment)/environmental issues about ETFE) evaluate embodied energy (the findings show values from 26.5 to 210 MJ/kg). Concerning 2 ETFE applications, the literature review reveals that ETFE can be used for different applications (roofs, façades, atria, in combination with PV (photovoltaic) technology, etc.). Moreover, additional issues (acoustics, shading, etc.) are presented and critically discussed. Furthermore, a separate part with case studies is included. In this way, the present article offers useful information about ETFE, based on different factors, focusing on ETFE applications for buildings and constructions.

The aim of this work was to investigate the physical and mechanical performance of architectural polyester (PES)-poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) membranes exposed to different artificial aging conditions. Two commercially available architectural membranes were chosen as research objects. The durability of the PES/PVC fabrics was evaluated by the loss in mechanical performance, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis in order to understand the effect of the degradation agents on the surface of the membranes. The mechanical performance of the PES/PVC membranes was unchanged. Scanning electron microscopy images of the tested materials showed initial cracks after aging. The X-ray fluorescence analysis showed that at the time of aging, the amount of Cl and Si decreased slightly, while Ti decreased by half, and Ca by volume increased twice. Dr. Virginija Sacevi cienė planned the aging of the materials and the qualitative tests after aging, performed some of the aging tests, carried out mechanical testing and analysis, supervised the research, and wrote the manuscript. Dr. Milda Jucienė performed some of the aging tests, carried out color change tests and analysis, and participated in the planning of qualitative tests after aging. Dr. Vaida Dobilaitė performed literature analysis, performed some of the aging tests, and participated in the planning of qualitative tests after aging. Dr. Valentina Krylova performed some literature analysis, carried out the wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence analysis, and identified some of the chemical compositions. Dr. Skirma Žalenkienė performed scanning electron microscopy and analysis and did morphological characterization. Dr. Njolė Dukštienė performed X-ray diffraction analysis and identified some of the chemical compositions. Dr. Raimondas Bli udžius participated in the mechanical testing of materials, analyzed the results of the research, and wrote the English version of the text and corrections after revision.

Wandelbare Leichtbaukonstruktionen mit Membranen erfreuen sich immer größerer Beliebtheit. Durch eine adaptive Gebäudehülle steigt die Funktionalität des Gebäudes und innerhalb von Minuten kann z. B. ein Sportstadion in eine Mehrzweckarena umgewandelt werden. Im Mai 2019 wurde das Al‐Janoub‐Stadion in Katar eröffnet. Mit seinem 10 800 m2 großen wandelbaren Membrandach ist es ein Meilenstein in der modernen Stadionarchitektur. Dabei wurde das innovative Konzept des wandelbaren Innendachs optimal in das Erscheinungsbild der Gesamtarchitektur integriert. Innerhalb von 30 Minuten ist das wandelbare Membrandach verfahrbar, sodass der gesamte Stadioninnenraum verschattet ist. Die Möglichkeit der Verschattung ist in einem Gebiet mit starker Sonneneinstrahlung essenziell. Ein wandelbares Membrandach hilft dabei, selbst unter extremen Bedingungen die Temperaturen zu reduzieren und den Nutzerkomfort zu gewährleisten.
