Stem Cell Research: The Facts, the Myths and the Promises

Abstract: While embracing the quest for advances in biomedicine, we cannot overlook the ethical responsibility to the patient and society. Regardless of the approach to harvest or culture stem cells human therapeutic application may still be years in the future.

“…Although, there are clinically relevant examples of engineered tissues in various animal models including even osteomyocutaneous flaps [87], the problem of harvesting the necessary amount of stem or progenitor cells in patients compromised by their disease remains unsolved. Therefore, there is an urgent need for a supply of phenotypically and functionally well-defined stem cells of high and standardized quality for a safe clinical application [88]. This problem is targeted and could potentially be solved by using stem cell lines.…”

“…Thus, the use of BMSC is a promissory source of stem cell once it did not involve the same philosophical, ethical, and religious issues observed with the use of embryonic stem cells, and the use of hematopoietic and mesenchymal bone marrow cells opened up a new horizon in regenerative medicine (Lo et al 2003, Braun et al 2006. Consequently, there is a great enthusiasm about the possibilities of using bone marrow stem cells to treat numerous diseases in several species of animals, especially in the dogs (Suter et al 2004).…”

“…Signaling crosstalk in the control of stem cell fate Typically, mES cells are propagated in the presence of serum and in coculture with a layer of fibroblasts that provide the LIF that inhibits ES cell differentiation (Lo et al, 2003). LIF is a member of the IL6 cytokine family that signal through receptor complexes including the transmembrane receptor, gp130.…”
