Background:Patients in oncology setting are struggling with the complexed disease, and long and intensive treatment options. This increase the need of patients for more coordination and effective hand-off between health providers including nurses.Aims:The main aim of this project is to improve the effectiveness of hand-off between nurses in the oncology setting using lean management principles.Methods:One group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design was conducted at King Hussain Cancer Center during quarter two to quarter four in 2017. The project was conducted using the lean tools including root cause analysis, redesigning the hand-off process; using structured tools, and standardization of the hand-off process.Results:The finding of this project showed a significant decreasing in the hand-off duration and the incidence of events related to nursing practice deviation in post-intervention. Moreover, the results showed that the nurse satisfaction score was improved. However, there is a little difference in patient satisfaction results between two quarters for overall satisfaction and per each domain.Conclusion:The project approved that the use of structured tools, safety briefing, and standardized hand-off process play important role in improving the effectiveness of the hand-off process.

Standard Work (SW) focuses on reducing variability and waste based on three conceptual elements: takt-time, work sequence, and work-in-process. Considering the importance of SW implementation in the Construction Industry, there is a need for adapting the conceptual elements due to differences between the production systems. This paper discusses the singularities of SW concepts adaptation in construction processes and proposes four implementation rules. A participatory case study was conducted aimed at the implementing SW in the construction of the reinforced concrete structure of a 26-floor residential building developed by a Brazilian construction company. This process is characterized by long cycle time, a great number of interrelated operations performed by workers with specialized skills who traditionally have autonomy in organizing their work. The singularities refer to the adaptation of the conceptual elements to the context investigated and resulted in four rules to implement SW in the construction industry: (a) define daily work packages as a control parameter due to the long takt-time; (b) focus the specifications of standard work sequences on the team, allowing space for autonomous decisions; (c) establish batches' size prioritising the sharing of resources between work packages; and (d) define specifications for transporting and storing resources since there are constant modifications of the workstations.

Applying the Kaizen Management System in the Manufacturing Process of Artistic Products in Handicraft Workshops

Being knowledge-based, handicrafts-manufacturing workshops established by art graduates are to design and manufacture innovative products in line with modern lifestyle. Unfortunately, such workshops are often encountered with challenges due to lacking the use of a specific management system in their production and supply processes. For this purpose, the application of Kaizen's management system was discussed in the present study because of its ease of implementation, high effectiveness of results, low costs, and emphasis on teamwork in the production of handicrafts. This study was applied in terms of the research purpose with a descriptive survey design. The statistical population of the study included 17 handicrafts-manufacturing workshops established by art graduates in the last fifteen years. The results of this study showed that the application of Kaizen's management system and its operational procedures could provide conditions for continuous improvement in the production process of handicrafts, reduce the cost and time of production, increase quality, and enhance delivery performance.
