Spirometric Study of the Bronchodilating Effects of Hydroxyphenylorciprenaline (Th 1165 a) in Various Forms in a Group of 124 Coal Miners Suffering from Bronchospasm

Abstract: The measurement of forced expiratory volume (FEVS) was shown to be a valuable parameter in the study of various bronchodilators in coal-miners suffering from bronchospastic conditions. The study was performed in 124 coal miners. The effects of a new selective betamimetic bronchodilator, Th 1165 a, in the form of a metered aerosol, tablets and ampoules, were compared with those of isoprenaline (Aleudrin), orciprenaline (Alupent), adrenaline (epinephrine) and atropine methyl nitrate. The drugs were co… Show more

“…We cannot explain this phenomenon. An increase in pulse rate at 0.5-2 h after the administration of ^-agonist drugs has already been de scribed [6]. On the other hand, throughout the observation period we observed no clinically significant cardiovascular side effects with the 2 drugs.…”

“…Other sources suggest that oral /^-ago nists are not the first-choice drug for treat ment of reversible airway obstruction [3,[6][7][8][9][10][11], Indeed, inhaled agents act directly on the target organ and produce only min imal blood levels, consequently drastically decreasing systemic side effects [12]. It should also be pointed out that the combi nation of /^-agonists with other com pounds (e.g.…”

“…However, spirometry is reproducible, simple to perform, less influenced by effort, and both the FEV, and FVC are obtained (Fairbairn, Fletcher, Tinker, and Wood, 1962). Minette (1970), in a study of 225 subjects, found that the reproducibility of FEV1 and FEVy.73 was superior to the reproducibility of peak flow or forced expiratory flow. He found a great stability of baseline values and the most reliable way of expressing response to bronchodilator drugs was as the absolute increment in FEV1 (AFEV1) or as the increment expressed as a percentage of the baseline (A FEV1%).…”

“…The literature amply documents the bronchospasmolytic action of fenoterol [6,10,14,15,18,19,24,[28][29][30]32]. The present investigation, however, was con cerned with the question whether the inhaled substance acts only upon direct contact with 1 Suddenly passed away December 14, 1977. the bronchial tree, or whether the drug ef fect could also be achieved by using a meth od of administration that does not carry the drug directly to the lower airways.…”
