Species hybridization in Trifolium

Abstract: This investigation confirms the existence of a high degree of incompatibility between species of Trifolium . Two techniques were developed in an attempt to overcome the barriers to hybridization . The first deals with the use of grafting as a screening technique for compatible genotypes, and the second is an embryo culture method for salvaging hybrid embryos which would otherwise abort . The value of these methods is discussed, and the results are compared with those from hybridizations of non-grafted material… Show more

“…2 Interspecific hybridization in Trifolium is uncommon (Evans 1962) and breeding efforts rely largely on artificial methods (Quesenberry & Taylor 1976). However, some species combinations are compatible.…”

“…hybridum (aslike clover) nat. 2 T. repens can hybridize with T. ambiguum, T. hybridum (both locally naturalized) and T. ithsmocarpum (Evans 1962;Caradus & Williams 1995). Hybridization between these species has been achieved through hand pollination, although F 1 hybrid fertilities are unreported.…”

“…Hybridisation of T. arvense with white clover has been attempted (Evans 1962), but only embryos which either become contaminated or which aborted were obtained. Recent developments in embryo culture techniques may make it worthwhile to repeat such attempts.…”
