Solar and Shading Potential of Different Configurations of Building Integrated Photovoltaics Used as Shading Devices Considering Hot Climatic Conditions

Abstract: This study investigates the use of building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPVs) as shading devices in hot climates, with reference to the conditions of Saudi Arabia. It used parametric numerical modelling to critically appraise the potential of eight design configurations in this regard, including vertical and horizontal shading devices with different inclination angles. The study assumed that the examined shading devices could be entirely horizontal or vertical on the three exposed facades, which is common pract… Show more

“…Building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems consist of the integration of PV modules into building envelope [3]. In BIPV systems, PV modules simultaneously serve as building envelope material and power generator, and have been widely used for exterior shading [4,5]. There is a likelihood of performance degradation in a BIPV system due to various factors, including the increase of PV module temperature [6].…”

“…The second category further distinguishes cold and warm façades, depending on whether the BIPV modules contain a ventilated air gap or not. Additionally, accessories exist such as parapets, balconies, and solar shadings not belonging directly to the building skin [42].…”

“…In the north-western province of Ha'il, domestic energy consumption has skyrocketed to unprecedented levels, leading to increasingly frequent power outages during the harsh summer months, and sometimes during the unusually cold winters as well, when power demands peak. At present, the Kingdom is in the midst of implementing its ambitious Saudi Vision 2030 programme; an undertaking that seeks to drive economic development by building a thriving, diversified, and sustainable economy [4,5]. However, satisfying increasing domestic and industrial electricity demands while keeping greenhouse gas emissions low is a major challenge.…”
