Motivation plays an important role when it comes to regular physical exercise. Hence, low levels of intentions to continue exercising in the future may ultimately lead to higher rates of exercise dropout. The first objective of the present research was to test a theoretical model considering the dark side of motivational determinants on intentions towards exercising in the future. The second objective consisted in comparing groups with different characteristics, as a way to identify individuals with weaker intention, which is believed to be an indicator of a higher dropout risk. In total, 544 (294 female; 250 male) gym exercisers aged between 18 and 58 years (M = 35.00; SD = 11.57) partook in the present research. Participants were engaged in fitness group classes (n = 273) or in cardio/resistance workouts (n = 271), and their exercise experience ranged from 3 to 120 months (M = 47.41; SD = 7.54). Results showed that the measurement and the structural model had an excellent fit. In addition, the structural model was invariant between gender, fitness activities, and exercise experience. Each group displayed different explained variance in intention to continue exercising. Overall, male, young adults and more experienced exercisers had stronger intentions towards exercising. Fitness instructors should be aware of their own thwarting behaviors, especially when interacting with female, young and less experienced exercisers, since they have weaker intentions to exercise in the future, possibly representing an increased risk of withdrawal.

Resumen El objetivo de este estudio consistió en comprobar la capacidad de predicción del apoyo a la autonomía del docente en educación física, las necesidades psicológicas básicas y la motivación autodeterminada sobre la diversión, la importancia e intención hacia la educación física y la actividad física habitual. Se empleó una muestra de 718 estudiantes (346 chicos y 372 chicas) con edades comprendidas entre los 13 y los 19 años (M = 15,76, DT = 1,20). Se midió el apoyo a la autonomía, las necesidades psicológicas básicas, la motivación, la diversión, la importancia de la educación física, la intencionalidad para ser físicamente activo y la actividad física habitual. Se realizaron análisis estadísticos descriptivos y las correlaciones bivariadas de todas las variables objeto de estudio, análisis factoriales confirmatorios de los instrumentos y un análisis mediante el modelo de regresión estructural. Los resultados revelaron relaciones positivas y significativas entre todas las variables. Así, el apoyo a la autonomía predijo positivamente la satisfacción de las necesidades psicológicas básicas, y esta, a su vez, predijo la motivación autodeterminada, que predijo la diversión. La diversión predijo la importancia concedida a la educación física, y esta la intención de ser físicamente activo, que finalmente predijo la tasa de actividad física habitual. Los resultados contribuyen a optimizar el compromiso de los jóvenes hacia la actividad física, tanto dentro como fuera del aula.

Psychometric Properties of a Spanish Version of the Basic Needs Satisfaction in Sports Scale

The Basic Needs Satisfaction in Sport Scale (BNSSS) is an instrument designed to measure the level of satisfaction of the three basic psychological needs (BPN) in sports, according to The Self-Determination Theory (SDT). The purpose of this research was to adapt BNSSS to Mexican Spanish and analyze its psychometric properties (factorial validity, factorial invariance, internal consistency, convergent validity, and nomological validity). Thus, 542 athletes (average age: 12.06 years; SD = 1.83) were asked to answer a set of questionnaires. Confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) supported both the structure of five related factors and the trifactorial structure after eliminating an item. Nevertheless, the reliability analysis indicated strong internal consistency, and the average variance extracted (AVE) from the subscales was acceptable except for the volition factor, thus supporting the trifactorial model. Scores derived from the instrument's three-factors offered evidence of the criterion validity, through a positive and meaningful relation with enjoyment and subjective vitality. Moreover, results of multi-sample analysis supported that factorial structure is invariant between men and women. In conclusion, this BNSSS Spanish version displayed adequate psychometric properties, showing that it can be used to measure the three basic psychological needs.
