Sinonasal epithelial-Myoepithelial carcinoma-A rare entity

Abstract: Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma is a rare salivary gland tumor. It comprises less than 1% of all salivary gland tumors. It generally arises from the parotid gland. Unusual sites of occurrence include sinonasal tract, lung, trachea, lacrimal gland and breast. Histopathologically epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma comprises a dual population of ductal and myoepithelial cells. We report an extremely rare case of epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma occurring in the sinonasal tract of young man.

“…3 If the tumor is accessible for resection, radical resection is the treatment of choice for myoepithelial carcinoma. 4 Though in our case total maxillectomy was not done as preoperative biopsy report was inverted papilloma and during dissection we did not found any involvement of palate, alveolar margin and zygomaticomaxillary complex. Radiation therapy can be used, either alone or in conjunction with and after surgery, particularly for unresectable lesions or metastatic disease.…”

“…6 Radiotherapy either with or without chemotherapy is reserved for those tumors which are not resectable. 5 Five-year survival rate is 80% following surgical resection. In our case we did surgical resection and then followed the radiotherapy to control the local recurrence.…”

“…Wide surgical excision with a clear margin has been recommended (2)(3)(4)7,10,11). As with other malignant head and neck tumors, EMCa tumors have a propensity for infiltration and local recurrence.…”
