BackgroundWorld literature suggests parapharyngeal space lesions account for only 0.5% head and neck tumours and the majority of the minor salivary gland tumours are malignant. The parapharyngeal space is very rare site for this tumour.Case presentationTwo cases of primary pleomorphic adenomas arising de novo from minor salivary glands in the para pharyngeal space are reported. Review of literature, clinical features, pathology, radiological findings and treatment of these tumours are discussed.ConclusionPleomorphic adenoma arising de novo in the parapharyngeal space is of rare occurrence. High index of suspicion and an adequate clearance of the tumour with a cuff of surrounding dispensable normal tissues is the key to successful treatment of such tumours.
Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma is a rare salivary gland tumor. It comprises less than 1% of all salivary gland tumors. It generally arises from the parotid gland. Unusual sites of occurrence include sinonasal tract, lung, trachea, lacrimal gland and breast. Histopathologically epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma comprises a dual population of ductal and myoepithelial cells. We report an extremely rare case of epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma occurring in the sinonasal tract of young man.
Compared with patients with PNI-negative disease, patients with PNI-positive disease had much worse outcome despite aggressive adjuvant treatment. It warrants escalation of therapy and modification in radiation portals to cover neural pathways in patients with PNI-positive disease.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
