Developing sustainable materials for recovering and recycling nutrients from wastewater is critically needed for nutrients such as phosphorus that have a diminishing supply. Struvite crystallization is emerging as a promising strategy for phosphorus recovery which can be enhanced with seeding through microalgal biochar. The main bottleneck of using microalgae is its high harvesting cost. In this study, an integrated electrocoagulation-flotation (ECF) process is used to recover and at the same time modify the algal surface with magnesium anode and inert carbon cathode. Harvesting efficiency of 98% was achieved with 40.78 mA cm−2, 0.5 cm inter-electrode distance and energy consumption of 4.03 kWh kg−1 in 15 min. The harvested microalgae were pyrolyzed to obtain a yield of 52.90% Mg-laden microalgal biochar. Simultaneously, surface impregnation of 28% magnesium was attained as confirmed by Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Phosphorus recovery and struvite yield of 93.70% and 2.66 g L−1, respectively, were obtained from dosing 1.50 g L−1 Mg-laden microalgal biochar. Comparison of physicochemical characteristics of residual supernatant after microalgal harvesting and struvite recovery showed that the combined use of both the residuals can serve as a sustainable growth medium for microalgae. The overall operating cost of the integrated process was found to be 2.48 USD kg−1 with a total energy consumption of 10.76 kWh kg−1, which was found to be lower than conventional harvesting unit processes such as centrifugation and filtration. This novel approach can help attaining a circular bioeconomy by encompassing nutrient recovery and waste management in an integrated process.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) of food waste (FW) has been gaining more interest as it has potential for the production of organic amendments with high struvite (NH4MgPO4·6H2O) content, which is a nutrient of great interest in sustainable agriculture. In this study, the influence of AD of FW in one- and two-phase configurations on methane production and the potential for struvite formation using digestate, was evaluated. It was found that the two-phase is a more efficient as its organic loading rate is 18% higher than that of one-phase configuration. In addition, the two-phase yielded a higher methane content in biogas (>60%) and a higher organic matter transformation in each of the AD stages (>20%); further, the digestate complied with the regulatory requirements for the use of organic amendments, thereby being deemed as a Type-B material with a struvite precipitation potential, exceeding 80%, as opposed to the digestate from one-phase configuration, which may represent a revenue of up to US$ 26,505 per year.

Wastewater contains resources, which can be recovered for secondary use if treated properly. Besides research in zero liquid discharge solutions, the aim of the study was a simultaneous recovery of products from a wastewater treatment plant’s dewatering liquor. To be specific, we investigated a simultaneous recovery of struvite and irrigation water using electrodialysis (ED) in laboratory experiments. Two products were obtained from ED—concentrate and diluate. The concentrate was precipitated to obtain struvite. On average, 11 g of wet precipitate (including 17.58% of dry solids) were obtained from 1 L of concentrate. Crystal phases were confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), with showing 94–97% recovery of struvite, while the remaining 3–6% were identified as hazenite. The average yield of crystal struvite was 1.76 g. Both struvite and hazenite may further be used as a fertilizer. Next, we suggest using the second ED product, the diluate, as irrigation water if it meets the irrigation water requirements. Attention was paid to the concentrations of dissolved solids (DS) in diluate, which decreased by an average of 93% compared to the input values in the dewatering liquor. In line with the observed Czech or EU standards indicators, we can say that the diluate can be used in agriculture, namely as irrigation water (Category I—water suitable for irrigation).
