Milk play a major role in human sources of nutrition and remain as the most important prominent in the Sudanese diet. Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae are humans and animals opportunistic pathogens, responsible for a wide range of infections. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of the commercial available milk and to detect ESBL producing E. coli and K. pneumoniae from raw milk samples of cow in Al Jazirah state, Sudan. Seventy fresh row cow milk samples were collected and examined using standard microbiological methods, ESBL detection was performed on all the isolates by Ceftazidime screening test, those shows positive results by screening method were subjected to ESBL confirmatory test using Double-Disk Synergy Test and Molecular base detection using conventional PCR. Out of the 70 collected samples, 58 (82.8%) showed positive isolating result, the highest prevalence of the isolates was K. pneumoniae 36 (62%) followed by E. coli 22 (38%). The most resistance antibiotics against isolates was Ampicillin (98%), ESBL production was detected among 17 out of the 22 isolated E. coli (29.3%) and 26 (44.8%) out of the 36 isolated K. pneumoniae. The ESBL gene encoding the ESBL isolates was CTX-M gene representing 61% fellows by SHV gene (23%) and TEM gene (16%). ESBL-producing bacteria may also be transferred via waste milk to calves, thus further spreading antibiotic resistance in the farm environment.

The current work aimed to determine the prevalence of Escherichia coli in fresh ground beef purchased from butchers' shops in Suez Governorate, Egypt, and the antibiotics susceptibility pattern of the isolated bacteria. E. coli was isolated and detected on tryptone bile glucuronide agar (TBGA) plates as chromogenic selective medium for this species. The sensitivity and resistance of the isolated bacteria to antibiotics were performed according to the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards guidelines (NCCLS). A total of 299 bacterial isolates were recovered from 130 ground beef and E. coli had the highest frequency of occurrence (81.5%). The isolated enteric bacteria were identified phenotypically and genotypically as Serratia marcescens, E. coli, Enterobacter cloacae and Klebsiella pneumoniae and deposited in the GenBank nucleotide sequence database under accession numbers KU237235, KU237236, KU237237 and KU237238, respectively. Antibiotic susceptibility test showed that the four isolated species were susceptible to norfloxacin, pefloxacin, kanamycin and ceftriaxone, and resistant to clindamycin and the other tested antibiotics showed different susceptibility pattern with each tested species. Precautions and strict hygienic measures should be taken during the processing stages of ground beef in order to avoid contamination by enteric bacteria.

The present study describes the prevalence of extended spectrum b-lactamases (ESBL) producing E. coli in raw chevon, milk and human samples in different districts of Chhattisgarh state. A total of 330 samples comprising of chevon (n=126), raw milk (n=104), human urine and stool (n=100) were collected from Bilaspur, Durg, Raipur, Rajnandgaon and Dhamtari districts of Chhattisgarh and processed for isolation of E. coli. The biochemically confirmed E. coli isolates were further screened of for the presence of bla TEM gene by PCR amplification. Analysis of samples indicated an overall prevalence of 31.52%. The highest prevalence of E. coli was recorded in fresh chevon samples (38.09%) followed by human urine samples (37.14%), human stool samples (30%) followed by milk samples (20.19%). In -vitro antibiotic sensitivity test of E. coli isolates revealed that all isolates to be highly sensitive towards imipenem, gentamicin, ciprofloxacin, amoxyclav, ampicillin, oxytetracyclin. The highest numbers of E. coli isolates were found resistant to erythromycin, cefotaxim, ceftazidime, cephalexin and cifixime. The 49 E. coli isolates were found to have Multiple Antibiotic Resistance (MAR) index more than 0.2, thus indicating indiscriminate use of antimicrobials. The 44 (42.3%) isolates were identified as presumptive ESBL producers and out of them 39.4% isolates were found to harbour the bla TEM gene on their plasmid DNA indicating the presence of multidrug resistant ESBL producing E. coli in foods of animal origin and human samples.
