Prevalence and molecular characterization of extended-spectrum b-Lactamases (blaTEM) producing Escherichia coli isolated from humans and foods of animal origin in Chhattisgarh, India

Abstract: The present study describes the prevalence of extended spectrum b-lactamases (ESBL) producing E. coli in raw chevon, milk and human samples in different districts of Chhattisgarh state. A total of 330 samples comprising of chevon (n=126), raw milk (n=104), human urine and stool (n=100) were collected from Bilaspur, Durg, Raipur, Rajnandgaon and Dhamtari districts of Chhattisgarh and processed for isolation of E. coli. The biochemically confirmed E. coli isolates were further screened of for the presence of bla… Show more

“…The results of the biochemical tests done with each of the isolate are shown in Table 5. These result are in conformity with other South Asian studies such as Surve et al (2011), Dewangan et al (2017) and Gupta et al (2020). E. coli is an indicator organism to show if any sample/ objects is contaminated with materials of fecal origins.…”

“…The bla TEM and bla CTX-M genes were detected in 85.5% and 58.00%, respectively. Dewangan et al (2017) from Chhattisgarh detected 39.4% isolates were found to harbour L: 100 bp DNA ladder.…”

“…Resistance mediated by the bla TEM gene [11] stands out for its involvement in food matrices in the dissemination and microevolution of antibiotic-resistant bacteria [12][13][14]. It presents itself as a major challenge in the control of Gram-negative bacteria [15,16].…”
