Short CommunicationPlatelet parameters in subjects infected with hookworm

Abstract: Hookworm is an important intestinal parasite infection with high prevalence in tropical countries. In addition to iron deficiency anaemia, the human hookworm appears to have evolved a number of complementary strategies to overcome the host's haemostatic processes. These include the inhibition of blood coagulation, platelet aggregation and mediator release, and the secretion of fibrinogenolytic enzymes. In this work, we studied the platelets in the subjects with detection of hookworm infection from screening st… Show more

“…32 Increased MPVs are also seen with lower platelet counts in patients with Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever. 33 Decreases in MPV have also been associated with some infections, including sepsis, 34 hookworm, 35 and Trichinella. 36 Recently, we noticed that some patients with infection with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) had relatively low MPVs.…”

“…The increase in platelet volume in malaria may be caused by peripheral platelet destruction with early release of large immature platelets from the bone marrow. Wiwanitkit et al reported that a statistically significant decrease of MPV values was detected in the patients with hookworm infection 13. No significant difference in platelet count was found between the subjects with or without hookworm infection in the study.…”

“…Studies by Veraldi et al showed that neutrophils and lymphocytes were involved in the development of the ancylostome infection and that these cells were found in some tissue fluids . Wiwanitkit et al revealed that platelets were associated with ancylostomiasis. We observed elevated neutrophils and platelets and decreased lymphocytes in the patient group in comparison with the healthy controls.…”
