Evaluation of Platelet Parameters in Patients With Pulmonary Hydatid Cyst

Abstract: Background:Echinococcosis is a near-cosmopolitan zoonosis caused by adult or larval stages of tapeworms (cestodes) into the genus Echinococcus (family Taeniidae). It was demonstrated that platelets were capable of killing parasites independent from leukocytes. Purpose: The aim of our study was to examine mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet mass (PM) and platelet count (PC), which are practical indicators of platelet activity in preoperative and postoperative periods of the patients with hydatid cyst. Methods:I… Show more

“…The current study results on MPV were in disagreement with the results of these two studies. Although most studies in the literature reported MPV as an inflammatory marker in many infectious and rheumatological diseases as well as a guiding parameter in diagnosis and treatment ( 7 , 8 , 19 , 25 - 27 , 30 , 32 , 33 ), the present study determined that it is not a significant inflammatory marker for brucellosis patients.…”

“…( 4 , 28 , 29 ). High MPV levels also occur in infectious diseases like pulmonary tuberculosis, CCHF, and hydatid cyst disease ( 30 - 32 ). On the other hand, lower MPV levels were detected by some researchers in active inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, acute pancreatitis, and appendicitis ( 7 , 8 , 25 , 33 ).…”

“…Similarly, Fajardo and Rao [6] detected an increase in thrombocyte size in patients with malaria in their study. Recently, Küçükbayrak et al [7] observed preoperative and postoperative MPV values of patients with pulmonary hydatid cysts and found that MPV values were significantly increased in preoperative period compared to postoperative period. Our results were in accordance with the literature.…”
