Platelet Parameters in Hepatic Hydatid Cysts

Abstract: Background. Hepatic hydatid cyst infection is caused by microorganisms named Echinococcus which belong to family Taeniidae. Platelets are considered as a mediator in inflammation and infectious diseases because of the various proinflammatory substances that they contain. Design and Methods. Thirty-three patients who were admitted to Doğubayazıt State Hospital's General Surgery Clinic with a diagnosis of hepatic cyst hydatid were enrolled in this retrospective study. Laboratory data of the patients in pre- and … Show more

“…Another explanation could be that activated platelets in inflammatory conditions tend to be larger in size. Moreover, after utilization of active platelets in inflammatory processes, the remaining inactive smaller platelets may cause a reduction in MPV (Aktas et al, 2013a, 2013b; Bhatia et al, 2012; Kapsoritakis et al, 2001; Pongstaporn and Bunyaratavej, 1999; Sit et al, 2013; Song et al, 2012).…”

“…Literature is full of data about the association between inflammation and RDW [1][2][3][4] and MPV. [4][5][6][7][8] Although they are both inexpensive and easy to access tests, clinical usefulness of these parameters are controversial. In this review, we aimed to show the clinical significance of these hemogram parameters in inflammatory states by reviewing the related studies in literature.…”

“…While most of the evidence relates to intravascular parasites, there is some evidence for an active role for platelets in patients with extravascular parasites, in particular to Echinococcus granulosus . While the precise mechanism remains unclear, variables such as mean platelet volume, (MPV) platelet factor 4 and β-thromboglobulin have been used in the demonstration of platelet activation [ 35 , 36 ]. The significantly greater number of platelets in Texels is consistent with that observed in resistant sheep following T. circumcincta infection in a previous study [ 37 ] and suggests that platelets may contribute to the resistant phenotype of the Texel.…”
