Serological and molecular investigation of porcine sapovirus infection in piglets in Xinjiang, China

Abstract: Porcine sapovirus (PoSaV) is one of the important pathogens that cause acute gastroenteritis in piglets. A survey on the infection and epidemic status of PoSaV in Xinjiang Province, Northwest China, was conducted in this study. We applied indirect viral protein 1 (VP1)-ELISA method to detect specific antibodies in 1218 serum samples of 3-month-old piglets collected from eight regions in Xinjiang during 2013-2014 and also detected PoSaV in 146 diarrhea stools of piglets in these eight regions using RT-PCR techn… Show more

“…PoSaV was detected in 7.6% of the samples. On the other hand, the lowest PoSaV detection rates were observed in China, where the virus was detected in 3.42% of 146 diarrheic stool samples of one-month-old piglets [ 84 ].…”

“…Only GIII SaVs have been adapted to cell culture, so the attempts to isolate other SaVs in cell culture for diagnostic purposes are not practical. Antibodies against porcine SaVs could be detected in the SaV-infected pig serum samples using GIII SaV-specific VP1-ELISA (Jun et al, 2016;Liu et al, 2012b;Liu et al, 2014a) or recombinant porcine SaV viral-like particle ELISA (Alcalá et al, 2010;Lu et al, 2016). However, the sensitivity of the above assays is lower than the detection methods targeting viral nucleic acids (Oka et al, 2015).…”

“…Sapovirus has a wide host spectrum, infecting not only humans ( 6 , 7 ), but also oysters ( 8 ), bats ( 9 ), rats ( 10 ), dogs and cats ( 11 , 12 ), chimpanzees ( 13 ), and pigs ( 14 ). SaV is one of the main pathogens that cause acute gastroenteritis in children and the elderly ( 1 , 15 , 16 ) and was observed for the first time under electron microscopy from the stool samples of children with diarrhea from United Kingdom in 1976 ( 17 , 18 ).…”
