A crystal violet (CV) standard was irradiated under a Hg-Cd lamp for different exposure times to obtain various N-demethylation products. CZE effectively separated the photodegradation products based on molecular weight differences. In contrast, micellar EKC (MEKC), using SDS as the surfactant, was ineffective because the binding constants of the demethylation products and SDS were too close for separation. Nevertheless, MEKC analysis of ink has applications in forensic science because MEKC separated neutral components in the inks. Thus, MEKC can be used to obtain an ink "fingerprint" since each ink is unique depending on the location and time it was made. In contrast, CZE is useful for dating inks because CV is the primary ink dye and it photodegrades slowly.

“…Fluorescence detection helped to improve the discriminating power of the method, as several inks containing the same UV response gave different fluorescence profiles. Zlotnick and Smith [52] have utilized MEKC with borate SDS buffers in the analysis of rollerball inks. The results demonstrated the potential of CE to analyze such samples and noted the advantage that small sample sizes can be used in this technique.…”

In this paper, capillary electrophoresis in clinical and forensic analysis is reviewed on the basis of the literature of 1999, 2000 and the first papers in 2001. An overview of progress relevant examples for each major field of application, namely (i) analysis of drug seizures, explosives residues, gunshot residues and inks, (ii) monitoring of drugs, endogenous small molecules and ions in biofluids and tissues, (iii) general screening for serum proteins and analysis of specific proteins (carbohydrate deficient transferrin, alpha1-antitrypsin, lipoproteins and hemoglobins) in biological fluids, and (iv) analysis of nucleic acids and oligonucleotides in biological samples, including oligonucleotide therapeutics, are presented.
