Scientific Literacy-Based Chemical Teaching Materials Design of Chemical Solution Materials on Sea Pollution Context

Abstract: The science teaching materials needed today are teaching materials that can make students literate in science. One way is to develop teaching materials based on scientific literacy. To produce good teaching materials, certain designs are needed to achieve learning goals and can improve students' scientific literacy. Students who have studied chemistry should be able to analyze natural phenomena in scientific chemistry, one of which is marine pollution. This research was conducted to design high school chemistr… Show more

“…The materials in science learning are combined with maritime context to ensure that teachers and students have knowledge and competence in protecting the marine environment [10]- [12], [18]. In addition, the understanding of maritime context needs to be given to science teachers for it to be integrated in the learning process, specifically in learning media [18], [19]. Similarly, teachers need to be trained on how to integrate subject matter with maritime contexts, specifically for the ones in archipelagos areas, to make the learning process becomes more contextual [11], [18], [20].…”

“…Teaching materials is anything that can be used to stimulate the learning process and convey messages to students so that effective learning can be created (Frasnyaigu et al, 2023). Suitable teaching materials are teaching materials that can support students' abilities in understanding and communicating science (Asikin & Yulita, 2019). The teaching materials can be combined with learning strategies and models according to the students' needs.…”

“…PISA interprets the results of the average scientific literacy score for Indonesian students in 2012 which is 382 points which places them in 64th place out of 65 countries, in 2015 which is 403 points which places them in 69th place out of 76 countries, and in 2018 which is 396 points which ranking them 62nd out of 71 countries (OECD, 2016;OECD, 2019). Based on these findings, Indonesian students have a relatively low level of scientific literacy achievement in terms of knowledge, competence, and scientific context (Asikin & Yulita, 2019;Dewi et al, 2021;Hadiprayitno et al, 2021;Santoso et al, 2022). According to a number of research findings, the low scientific literacy of Indonesian students is caused by several factors, one of which is their belief that Western science is more important than local culturebased science (Atmojo et al, 2019).…”
