Aim: This study aimed to determine nurses' attitudes toward job satisfaction and to describe the variables that affect their job satisfaction. Design: A non-experimental, cross-sectional study. Methods: A total of 1,850 nurses working in clinical hospital centres in Croatia, Slovenia and Serbia were approached. Of those, 475 participated in the study, making a total response rate of 25.6%. Data were collected through the Survey of Nursing Satisfaction. The questionnaire is owned by the Croatian Agency for Quality and Accreditation in Health Care and Social Welfare. Results: The overall results for all three countries show that men and women differed in their perception of exposure to discrimination at work (t = 2.62; df = 469; p < 0.01). Men, on average, were more satisfied at work (M = 3.47; SD = 0.68; p < 0.05) than women (M = 3.29; SD = 0.63; p < 0.05). Nurses in the Croatian hospital were the most satisfied with the amount of education they were exposed to (F2.470 = 18.09; p < 0.001) but felt more discriminated against at work than their counterparts from Slovenia and Serbia (F2.471 = 136.04; p < 0.001). Respondents rated their job satisfaction as good. Conclusion: In line with the findings, nurses should be able to move forward, improve communication and interpersonal relationships to be even more comfortable in the workplace. Each institution has quality indicators and it is very important to continuously conduct employee satisfaction surveys as these are beneficial for the staff, patients and healthcare quality.

Emotional intelligence and health care are closely linked. Empathy is regarded as one of key dimensions of emotional intelligence. The nursing profession has numerous general, but also generic, competencies which requires not only technical knowledge, but also psychological support in everyday work. The aim of this review paper is to point out the importance of assessing the emotional intelligence of nurses on the basis of recent data from the literature. There are many challenges and various sufferings that many health workers are exposed to, especially nurses, which clearly indicates the necessary fact, ie. requires a high degree of emotional skills and competence, because the more complex the job, the more important emotional intelligence. High self-awareness, self-control, the ability to cope with feelings are just some of the competencies that nurses/ technicians should possess. All these characteristics are important factors of emotional intelligence and a basic prerequisite for providing empathy. There are numerous tests and instruments used to assess emotional intelligence.

SAŽETAК Uvod/Cilj: Zadovoljstvo zaposlenih poslom predstavlja sastavni element kvaliteta rada u zdravstvenim ustanovama i proističe iz adekvatne motivisanosti zaposlenih za rad. Cilj rada je bio da se ispita da li postoji razlika u radnoj motivaciji i zadovoljstvu poslom među zdravstvenim radnicima u Vojvodini, Srbija. Metode: Istraživanje je sprovedeno na uzorku od 719 zdravstvenih radnika zaposlenih u tri doma zdravlja. Za prikupljanje podataka korišćen je upitnik, koji su zdravstveni radnici samostalno popunjavali. U statističkoj analizi podataka korišćeni su Studentov t-test, Spirmanov koeficijent korelacije, ROC analiza i binarna logistička regresiona analiza. Rezultati: Zdravstveni radnici su bili značajno više motivisani nego zadovoljni sledećim faktorima radne motivacije: postizanje ciljeva zdravstvene ustanove, priznanje za dobro obavljen posao, dobri međuljudski odnosi, mogućnost unapređenja i napredovanja, lični kvaliteti neposrednog rukovodioca, novčani iznos mesečne zarade, uslovi na radu, kooperativna radna atmosfera, siguran posao, podrška rukovodioca, posedovanje savremene opreme za rad i nagrada za posebno dobro urađen posao. Zdravstveni radnici su bili značajno manje motivisani sledećim faktorima radne motivacije-stručan nadzor nad radom, u odnosu na stepen njegovog ispunjenja/zadovoljenosti od strane zdravstvene ustanove. Zaključak: Zdravstveni radnici su više motivisani za rad nego zadovoljni poslom koji obavljaju. U cilju unapređenja kvaliteta rada zdravstvene ustanove i pružene zdravstvene zaštite, kao i povećanja zadovoljstva korisnika zdravstvenih usluga, neophodno je da menadžment zdravstvene ustanove kontinuirano sprovodi ispitivanja o radnoj motivaciji i zadovoljstvu poslom zdravstvenih radnika.
