Salmo kottelati, a new species of trout from Alakır Stream, draining to the Mediterranean in southern Anatolia, Turkey (Teleostei, Salmonidae)

Abstract: Salmo kottelati sp. n., is described from Alakır Stream (Mediterranean basin) in Turkey. It is distinguished from other Anatolian Salmo species by a combination of the following characters (none unique to the species): general body colour greenish to silvery in life; 7–9 parr marks along lateral line; four dark bands on flank absent in both sexes; black ocellated spots few, present only on upper part of flank in individuals smaller than 160 mm SL but in larger both males and females black spots numerous and lo… Show more

“…The Munzur Stream arises from the Munzur Mountains in the north of Ovacik and joins the Pülümür Stream and flows into the Keban Dam Lake. Salmo munzuricus, their identity was not clear up to now, newly described by Davut et al [16] , commonly known as red spotted trout is distinguished from other Anatolian Salmo species by having a large adipose fin in male (almost as large as dorsal or anal fins in older males), with a very narrow white margin, then red submarginal band, then a white stripe or spots, then red again in males. It is an endangered salmonid species with high economic value in Munzur Stream which is an important water supply in Turkey.…”

“…except Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, is revised continuously. Among molecular oriented ichthyologists, this part of Salmo diversity is most often referred to as brown trout Salmo trutta or "brown trout complex", whereas taxonomic oriented scientists, mainly focusing on morphology, continue to describe new species and recognize at least 50 distinct taxa (Delling and Doadrio, 2005;Su snik et al, 2006Su snik et al, , 2007Kottelat and Freyhof, 2007;Delling, 2010;Turan et al, 2009Turan et al, , 2011Turan et al, , 2012Turan et al, , 2014aTuran et al, , 2014bTuran et al, , 2017Turan et al, , 2020Doadrio et al, 2015;Froese and Pauly, 2019).…”

“…For this reason, several species have been recently described from the periphery of distribution of genus Salmo around the Mediterranean region (Delling, 2010;Turan et al, 2010Turan et al, , 2011Turan et al, , 2012Turan et al, , 2014aTuran et al, , 2014b and also in northern Africa, where a new dwarf species was described from Ifni Lake (Salmo akairos Delling & Doadrio, 2005). This latter species inhabits an isolated lake in the Atlas Mountains, presenting differences in morphological traits but scarce genetic differentiation with respect to other Atlantic lineages of S. trutta (Suárez et al, 2001;Delling & Doadrio, 2005;Snoj et al, 2011).…”
