Robust nanocoatings based on ionic silicones

Abstract: Two oppositely charged water-soluble oligosiloxanes with the same main chain were synthesized and used for the formation of multilayer nanocoatings. In spite of low molecular weight of the components, due to entropic reasons, linearly growing and robust films with a hydrophilic surface were formed for the first time. The multilayer films were found to be resistant to high temperature water treatment undergoing only reversible swelling and no surface recovery was observed after prolonged exposure to air indicat… Show more

“…The concept of the LbL technique was adapted for colloidal particles that serve as removable templates leading to the formation of the capsules with liquid cores [ 32 ]. Such a procedure enables the utilization of macromolecules of complex structure [ 34 ] varying in charge or glass transition [ 35 ] to reach the coatings and capsules of desired functionality [ 36 , 37 ].…”

“…Zwitterionic groups such as sulfobetaines and carboxybetaines are commonly used due to their enhanced wettability caused by the polarity of the charged groups. 87−92 LbL coatings have been formed on silicones to modify surfaces properties, 93 with potential for superior stability versus grafted polymer chains. 94 LBL coatings are comprised of alternating layers held together by secondary forces.…”

“…PEMs obtained from two oppositely-charged derivatives of the same polymer have already been reported, both for synthetic polymers, e.g., silicones [ 32 ] or PAH [ 33 , 34 ] and a natural polymer, i.e., chitosan [ 29 , 35 ]. However, these studies included PEMs obtained using just one pair (two in one case [ 33 ]), so they did not allow drawing conclusions on the influence of polymer substitution on the PEM behavior.…”
