Optimized Energy Management Schemes for Electric Vehicle Applications: A Bibliometric Analysis towards Future Trends

Concerns over growing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and fuel prices have prompted researchers to look into alternative energy sources, notably in the transportation sector, accounting for more than 70% of carbon emissions. An increasing amount of research on electric vehicles (EVs) and their energy management schemes (EMSs) has been undertaken extensively in recent years to address these concerns. This article aims to offer a bibliometric analysis and investigation of optimized EMSs for EV applications. Hundreds (100) of the most relevant and highly influential manuscripts on EMSs for EV applications are explored and examined utilizing the Scopus database under predetermined parameters to identify the most impacting articles in this specific field of research. This bibliometric analysis provides a survey on EMSs related to EV applications focusing on the different battery storages, models, algorithms, frameworks, optimizations, converters, controllers, and power transmission systems. According to the findings, more articles were published in 2020, with a total of 22, as compared to other years. The authors with the highest number of manuscripts come from four nations, including China, the United States, France, and the United Kingdom, and five research institutions, with these nations and institutions accounting for the publication of 72 papers. According to the comprehensive review, the current technologies are more or less capable of performing effectively; nevertheless, dependability and intelligent systems are still lacking. Therefore, this study highlights the existing difficulties and challenges related to EMSs for EV applications and some brief ideas, discussions, and potential suggestions for future research. This bibliometric research could be helpful to EV engineers and to automobile industries in terms of the development of cost-effective, longer-lasting, hydrogen-compatible electrical interfaces and well-performing EMSs for sustainable EV operations.

In this paper a novel battery thermal management system was experimentally studied. The batteries are submerged in a low boiling dielectric fluid with the aim to reduce the batteries surface temperature when subjected to high charge or discharge currents. The fluid change of phase allows to create a thermal buffer in case of instantaneous peak of absorbed current. This innovative system was studied on a battery pack composed of 3 cells in series and 3 cells in parallel connection for several discharge currents. For the sake of comparison, two battery packs of same dimensions were investigated: one submerged in the dielectric fluid and the second without the fluid. The cells potential and surface temperature were measured during discharges. Moreover, also the fluid temperature was evaluated in the external region. The results show a significant improvement of the thermal management since the increase of temperature is very restricted. This effect is even more evident when the fluid reaches the boiling point.

Nanoencapsulation of Silicon Carbide-Doped Hydrated Salt for Safe and High-Efficient Battery Thermal Management

Herein, silicon carbide (SiC)-doped hydrated salt phase change nanocapsules (NePCMs) with enhanced thermal conductivity and nonflammability were synthesized using a simple method for battery thermal management systems (BTMs). The additional amount of SiC played a critical role in the heat capacities of hydrated salt nanocapsules. The resultant phase change nanocapsules have a latent heat of over 145.6 kJ/kg, good encapsulation of around 60%, thermal conductivity of 0.51 W m–1 K–1, as well as good leak-proof property and thermal cycle stability. More importantly, due to the perfect core–shell structure, the hydrated salt nanocapsules exhibited a significant enhancement in corrosion protection and flame-retardant property. High-rate charging test at ambient temperature showed that the NePCMs cooling was able to maintain a low maximum temperature during the melting process and keep the battery temperature within a safe range. In conclusion, the phase change nanocapsules developed in this work may have great promise in the field of safe and high-efficient battery thermal management.
