Resistance to Institutions and Cultural Distance: Brigandage in Post-Unification Italy

Abstract: We study how cultural distance affects the rejection of imposed institutions. To this purpose, we exploit the transplantation of Piedmontese institutions on Southern Italy which occurred during the Italian unification.
