Driven by environmental and economic aspects, the proliferation of renewable energy sources (RES) has been expanded in power systems worldwide. In this regard, the intermittent generation of such RESs (e.g., photovoltaic and wind farms) can cause several operational and stability problems in such lowinertia power systems. To handle these issues, great interest in the literature has been directed to develop feasible grid-forming voltage source converters (VSC) control schemes that have voltage/frequency regulatory functions. Accordingly, an inclusive review is presented in this paper for these promising gridforming VSC control schemes which will be the backbone of sustainable converter-dominated power systems. Specifically, control structures, smart grid-support functionalities, stability issues, and fault current mitigations are compared considering the existing grid-forming VSC control schemes. Besides, the applications of grid-forming VSC along with their benefits and drawbacks are investigated for both isolated and bulk power systems. The evaluation aspects are also explored for assessing the performance of the existing VSC control schemes in the grid. Finally, the current challenges that face VSC in forthcoming applications and existing gaps are highlighted while corresponding perspectives for future research studies are defined for stable sustainable low-inertia power systems.INDEX TERMS Grid-forming VSC; control schemes; low-inertia power systems; renewable energy sources; energy storage systems.

External Current Source–Based Unilluminated PV Partial Shading Emulation System Verified Through the Hybrid Global Search Adaptive Perturb and Observe MPPT Algorithm

In this study, a novel PV emulator and the state-of-art learning–based real-time hybrid global search adaptive perturb and observe (P&O) maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm have been presented. The prime objective of the constructed emulator based on integration of unilluminated solar panels with an external current source to overcome the constraints such as the need for wide surrounding space, high installation cost, and lack of control over the environmental conditions. Moreover, the developed algorithm resolved the drawbacks of the conventional P&O MPPT method associated with the use of a constant perturbation size that leads to poor transient response, high continuous steady-state oscillation, and inefficient tracking performance of maximum power point voltage in the presence of partial shading. The intended algorithm has been verified using MATLAB/Simulink by applying comparative analysis with the conventional P&O MPPT. In addition, the performance of the proposed control scheme is validated experimentally with the implementation of MATLAB/Simulink/Stateflow a on dSPACE Real-Time-Interface (RTI) 1007 processor board and DS2004 A/D and CP4002 Digital I/O boards. The results indicate that the algorithm is effective in reducing power losses and faster in tracking the speed of the maximum power point with less oscillation. In addition, excellent dynamic characteristics of the proposed emulator have been proven to be an ideal tool for testing PV inverters and various maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms for commercial applications and university studies.

The current study aims to present a detailed analysis of a hybrid renewable energy system used for standalone operation. The hybrid system consists of a wind-driven synchronous generator, a photovoltaic solar system, and a battery storage system. The modeling of each system component is presented and described in detail. To achieve optimal energy exploitation, the maximum power point tracking algorithm is adopted. The management of synchronous generator operation is achieved through controlling the machine-side converter using a newly formulated predictive control scheme. To visualize the advantages of the proposed control algorithm, its performance is compared with the other two traditional predictive control approaches, mainly the model predictive direct power control and model predictive direct torque control systems. An effective control scheme is also adopted to manage the power storage in the battery using a bi-directional DC/DC converter. To maintain a balanced power flow between the system units, an energy management strategy is presented. Extensive tests are carried out to evaluate the performance of the hybrid system considering variable wind speed, variable sun irradiation, and variable load profiles. The obtained results for the synchronous generator performance visualize the validity and superiority of the proposed control scheme over the other two classic controllers. The results are also validating the effectiveness of the battery storage control system and confirming the validity of the constructed energy management strategy in achieving the energy balance between the system units.
