Reliability and Validity of a Portable Metabolic Measurement System

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to assess the reliability and validity of a portable metabolic system (TEEM 100) during submaximal and maximal (VO2max) exercise using a computer-based metabolic system as the reference system (REF). Between repeated trials of submaximal exercise at three constant loads, differences in ventilation (Ve) and oxygen consumption (VO2) were 0.2 +/- 4.9 L . min-1 and 0.03 +/- 0.10 L . min-1 for REF, and 1.9 +/- 0.7 L . min-1 and 0.00 +/- 0.17 L . min-1 for TEEM 100. Pooled intraclass re… Show more

“…The velocity attained during the last completed stage was determined as the subject's VIFT. Respiratory gas exchanges were measured with an automated portable metabolic system (VO2000; Medgraphics, St. Paul, MN) (34). Before each test, the O2 and CO2 analysis systems were calibrated.…”

“…The minute ventilation (V E ) and the oxygen and carbon oxide expired fraction were continuously measured by means of open circuit indirect calorimetry (TEEM 100™ Total Metabolic Analysis System, Aerosport, Ann Arbor, Mich., USA) [17][18][19][20] . The subjects used a nose clip and a medium flow pneumotachometer (Hans Rudolph™, Kansas City, MO, USA).…”

“…Simpler and cheaper ergospirometers were created for clinical and field investigation. Several studies validated the measurements of VO 2 , VCO 2 and V E by means of such clinical equipment [13][14][15][16][17][18][19] , however a few studies determined the quality of the derived measurements such as AT 20 .…”

“…Considerando a precisão de um dos equipamentos mais utilizados no Brasil (4)(5)(6)(7)(8) , bem como a relação custo-benefício de utilização das equações metabólicas sugeridas pelo American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) (1) , justifica-se a utilização das equações preditivas como estratégia de estimativa do consumo de oxigênio (VO 2 ) em atividades físicas diversas, incluindo a estimativa do VO 2máx .…”
