“…We suppose that a different oestrogen content in the culture medium (related to different FCS concentrations) might be partly responsible for the discrepancy. Steroid hormones are known to enhance the sensitivity of target cells to OT, possibly by modulating the expression of OT receptors [14,20]. Therefore, high E 2 levels in the culture medium could increase the number of OT binding sites in MCF7 and T47D cells, amplifying the effect of the peptide on cell growth.…”

“…MELVYN Why individual cells within a culture required widely different time intervals to traverse their own cycle is not known. This variability has been observed with bacteria t&), algae (2), yeasts (3), and animal cells in culture (4)(5)(6)(7). For example, in cultures of Chinese hamster ovary cells, the majority of cells had cycle durations varying from 14 to 21 hours (4), which is probably not due to genetic differences since it occurs in freshly cloned populations (5).…”

“…For example, in cultures of Chinese hamster ovary cells, the majority of cells had cycle durations varying from 14 to 21 hours (4), which is probably not due to genetic differences since it occurs in freshly cloned populations (5). Most variability occurs in the G1 phase of the cell cycle (6)(7)(8), as does the major regulatory event (7,9); G, variability and cell-cycle control, are probably related.…”

“…Vimentin expression in vitro has also been correlated with increased growth rate of mesothelial cells [4] and as an indicator of regenerating and proliferating lesions in kidney [11]. In the current study, however, the increase in vimentin expression in myoepithelial cells of lactating breast is most likely not associated with increased growth, as proliferation of myoepithelial cells is reported to cease at late pregnancy [37]. Vimentin upregulation may therefore be associated with specific functions that myoepithelial cells perform during lactation, for example, ejection of milk initiated through oxytocin recep-tors [38], increased synthesis of basement membrane which is required for growth and differentiation of secretory cells [45], or transport of metabolites to secretory cells [30].…”
