Oxytocin Receptors: Triggers for Parturition and Lactation?

Abstract: Specific binding of tritiated oxytocin to uterine receptors of pregnant rats increases dramatically at term and is maximal during labor. In mammary glands the increase in binding is gradual, reaching a maximum during the lactation period. Concomitant changes in the sensitivity of the uterus and mammary gland to oxytocin indicate that the receptor concentration is of functional significance. Oxytocin receptors, therefore, may regulate the response of the target organs to circulating oxytocin and thereby control… Show more

“…The oestrogen to progesterone ratio increases in the plasma of the rat during late pregnancy (Soloff et al 1979). This increase is due to an increase in the concentration of oestrogen (Y oshinaga et al 1969;Shaikh 1971) and to a decrease in the concentration of progesterone (Soloff et al 1979).…”

“…This increase is due to an increase in the concentration of oestrogen (Y oshinaga et al 1969;Shaikh 1971) and to a decrease in the concentration of progesterone (Soloff et al 1979). Administration of oestrogen to rats after the removal of the ovaries increases prolactin secretion Lawson and Gala 1974;Vermouth and Deis 1974), while the administration of progesterone immediately after ovariectomy prevents this increase (Vermouth and Deis 1974).…”

“…From our results, the increase of cortisol and the decrease of progesterone appeared to be involved in the onset of labor. Soloff et al (1979) reported that oxytocin receptors in the rat myometrium increased to the maximam at or near the labor. Investigations on the relationship between quantity of oxytocin receptors and hormonal changes should be necessary.…”

“…The human OXTR gene is located on chromosome locus 3p25. The expression levels of oxytocin receptors in the myoepithelial cells surrounding the alveoli of mammary glands remain constantly elevated throughout the lactation period (Soloff et al 1979).…”
