Relationship between side medicine-ball throw performance and physical ability for male and female athletes

Abstract: The purpose of the study was to examine the factors contributing to performance of a side medicine-ball throw (S-MBT) and a fast side medicine-ball throw (FS-MBT) and to analyze some of the factors which account for the difference in side medicine ball throw performance between the sexes. Sixteen males and ten females were evaluated by S-MBT, FS-MBT, isometric maximal trunk rotation torque (IMTRT), One repetition maximum of Parallel Squat (1RM(PS)) and Bench Press (1RM(BP)), Bench Press peak power (BP(PP)), St… Show more

“…The former association has been also reported in high level handball male and female players [20]. Our data are also in accordance with a study of volleyball players which reports a significant correlation between vertical jump and ball velocity during spiking [17] and with another study which reported a correlation between squat jump performance and medicine ball throwing velocity [21]. Most researchers agree that explosive lower limb power may be highly associated with throwing ball velocity [6,[22][23][24].…”

“…To our best knowledge, no study examined the associations between swimming performance and dynamic maximal trunk strength. Correlation analyses of different test protocols, trunk strengths and athletic performance measurements [20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28] and longitudinal studies of the effect of trunk muscle strength training on athletic performance [29][30][31][32][33] are found in the literature. These analyses generally show low to moderate correlations between trunk strength and athletic performance, with the exceptions of investigations of Dendas, Ikeda et al and Iwai et al [20,[23][24][25].…”

“…Nesta direção, a avaliação da forca em suas diferentes formas tem se mostrado importante indicador para a prescrição e controle do treinamento de atletas, avaliando a evolução do desempenho (GEBRIN et al, 2005), pela relação com a forca rápida de membros superiores (IKEDA et al, 2006).…”
