“…19 However, a stroboscopic evaluation of 121 teachers to look for signs of LPR showed no association between voice disorders and presence of signs suggestive of LPR. 20 In our study, 24 patients in group 1 (40.68%) had a positive RFS and 70 of the patients in group 2 (44.03%) had a positive RFS (OR = 0.87). Thus, no significant change in trend between the groups was observed.…”

“…There are controversies in the literature regarding the relation of the presence of these symptoms. In a research with teachers (15) , authors found no association between laryngopharyngeal reflux and voice disorders, but found an association between age (more frequent among the older ones) and those who reported a greater vocal disadvantage. On the other hand, a recent literature review (28) found that the consumption of certain foods, alcohol and the presence of gastroesophageal reflux may affect and favor vocal changes, such as hoarseness, throat clearing and cough (5,6,10) .…”

“…Concerning the record of signs and symptoms, throat clearing was self-reported in a higher percentage, which is consistent with findings of a research that consisted of 272 teachers (22) in the municipal network of São Paulo (82.4% of the case group, 64.8% of the control group, p=0.011). In general, this symptom is present among subjects who make excessive use of voice, who may have laryngopharyngeal reflux associated or not with the use of voice (15) . The most reported habits were: alcohol consumption, waking up at night and not avoiding some king of food.…”
