Reflectance indices with precision and accuracy in predicting cotton leaf nitrogen concentration

Abstract: Diagnostic methods assaying leaf optical properties can aid rapid site‐specific screening of crop nitrogen status. A set of calibration curves relating many 1.5‐nm band reflectance ratios to cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) leaf N concentration was established from plants grown in sunlit growth chambers and at a range of nitrogen levels. Diagnostic methods like remote sensing techniques that take advantage of the optical properties of leaves are another possibility to assess the nitrogen status of plants especially at larger spatial scales (Tarpley et al 2000, Osborne et al 2002, Wright et al 2004, Xue et al 2004. Remote sensing could provide inexpensive large area estimates of crop growth condition and can be used to monitor nutrient and other stresses, utilizing the information contained in the spectral reflectance data they measure.…”
