Reference values for the Chinese population of skin autofluorescence as a marker of advanced glycation end products accumulated in tissue

Abstract: The mean reference values of autofluorescence we established could be used for a Chinese population in a clinical setting and are agreement with those in a Caucasian population. Future developments are needed to make the advanced glycation end product reader reliable for lower skin reflections as well, independently of the skin colour.

“…The linear association between increasing chronological age and skin autofluorescence was previously reported in healthy individuals 34,35 and other CKD cohorts. 6,13 However, our study did not observe any significant relations between individual biochemical parameters of CKDmineral bone disease, including serum calcium, phosphate, and alkaline phosphatase with vascular calcification.…”

“…With regard to gender difference, our current study and some previous studies showed higher levels of skin autofluorescence in men. However, other studies did not show gender difference [29] or even showed higher levels of AGEs in women [30,31]. In addition to inadequate power because of small sample size, several other factors might play a role.…”

“…Chinese men usually have darker color than Chinese women. In a Chinese methodological study, the frequency of measurement failures was higher in men than women (21.5 vs. 11.0%, p < 0.01) [29]. …”

“…The value of AF was strongly related to age, but no significant difference between males and females was found. AF was lower in non-smokers than in smokers [11]. In persons with low skin reflectance (<10%), skin AF was dependent on skin colour, but was still related to age [12,13].…”
