“…It remains unclear whether the reduced allogeneic IL-7-induced LAK activity in three of 14 patients can be attributed to a general or specific immunosuppression or whether it reflects normal interindividual variations in the inducibility of LAK cells. Reduced natural killer (NK)-cell activity has been reported in patients with advanced cancer (Morikawa et al, 1989;Villa et al, 1991). On the other hand, we found striking interindividual differences in the degree of IL-7-induced LAK cell-activity even among healthy volunteers (Schadendorf et al, 1994a).…”

“…In addition, serum albumin concentrations were 2.5-3.5 g/dL and BMIs were around 18 kg/m 2 . Because malnutrition and aging have been shown to impair innate immune functions [17][18][19][20][25][26][27][28][29], NK cells and neutrophils in our study population could have been exhausted. Furthermore, it should be noted that serum CRP concentrations were above normal even at the beginning of the study, and persisted throughout.…”

“…The activity of NK cells in cancer patients was lower than that in normal subjects [29], and the number of CD3 − CD16/56 + cells as NK cells in our patients was also lower compared with healthy subjects. These changes may be related with malnutrition rather than lung cancer because correction of hypoproteinemia corrected the depressed NK activity quickly in malnourished cancer patients [29]. On the other hand, our results showed a significantly high proportion of ␥␦ T cells in patients compared with controls.…”

“…Because malnourished hospitalized adult patients and cancer patients are also known to have a significantly low total lymphocyte count and cellular immunity or natural killer (NK) activity [3,29], we also examined the nutritional status in our subjects by using Niederman's nutritional index [21] to evaluate its relationship to immune function.…”
