Immunological Competence and Nutritional Status in Patients with Lung Cancer

Abstract: The rate of infection in patients with malignant disease is significantly higher than in patients with benign disease. To investigate whether immunological competence is impaired in patients with lung cancer, we assessed neutrophil function (chemotaxis, phagocytosis, bacterial killing activity, and superoxide production), monocyte function (phagocytosis and killing activity), lymphocyte subsets using flow cytometry, and proliferation of lymphocytes stimulated by phytohemagglutinin, concanavalin A, and pokeweed… Show more

“…The fact that AGP was increased in the serum of septic patients and that the cytokines are major modulators of AGP gene expression (20) indicates the importance of determining whether the inhibitory effect of cytokines on neutrophil migration is also an AGP-dependent process. Moreover, it is also important to determine whether AGP is the serum factor that mediates the reduction of neutrophil migration reported for other diseases, such as diabetes (10), cirrhosis (11), AIDS (12), and cancer (13).…”

“…Serum factors have also been reported to play a role in the reduced neutrophil migration in other diseases, such as diabetes (10), cirrhosis (11), AIDS (12), and cancer (13). All of these diseases are associated with high susceptibility to infection.…”

“…TPN support is considered beneficial to improve the patients' nutritional status and immune function, and to lower the surgical complications, and to improve the quality of life [22][23][24][25][26][27][28] . But, TPN can also stimulate proliferation of the tumor cells [29,30] .…”
